Kitchen

• Inside the oven and under the burners. Baked-on grease is one of the top deductions. If you cooked at all over the past year, the oven needs more than a quick wipe.
• Inside the refrigerator, including the drawers and door seals. Mold in the crisper drawer is a fast way to lose money.
• Cabinet interiors. Crumbs, spills, and grease build up on shelves and inside cabinet doors. Landlords open them.
• Range hood filter. This one gets skipped constantly. If it's coated in grease, it's a problem.

Bathrooms

• Grout and caulk lines. Soap scum and mildew in tile grout is hard to remove once it's set. A good scrub brush and the right cleaner can get it, but it takes time.
• Toilet base and behind the toilet. Inspectors crouch down. They check the base, the bolts, and the wall behind it.
• Exhaust fan. Dusty fan covers are a small thing that landlords notice because they're a sign the unit wasn't maintained.

Floors and Baseboards

Baseboards collect dust and scuffs all year. Most people vacuum the floor but never wipe the baseboards. A clean floor with grimy baseboards still looks uncared for. Same goes for corners where a standard mop doesn't reach.

Walls and Light Switches

Light switch plates and outlet covers get touched hundreds of times. They're often visibly dirty by move-out. Walls with marks or scuffs should be spot-cleaned. You don't necessarily need to repaint, but obvious smudges are worth addressing.

DIY vs. Hiring a Professional Move-Out Clean

If your place is in decent shape and you have two or three people willing to spend a full day cleaning, a DIY approach can work. Budget at least six to eight hours for a two-bedroom apartment if you want to do it properly. That includes scrubbing the oven, cleaning inside all cabinets and drawers, deep-cleaning both bathrooms, washing baseboards, and wiping every surface.
