Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for Ohio Rentals

What Ohio Landlords Actually Check Before Returning Your Deposit

Losing part of your security deposit to a cleaning deduction is one of the most frustrating things about moving. I have talked to dozens of tenants in Columbus, Dublin, and Hilliard who scrubbed for hours and still got charged because they missed the inside of the oven or the top of the refrigerator. Ohio landlords have 30 days to return your deposit under state law, and they will document anything that looks like it needs professional attention. This checklist covers every room, including the appliance interiors most people forget entirely.

Kitchen

The kitchen takes the most time. Budget at least two to three hours here alone if you have cooked regularly.

  • Oven interior: Remove the racks, soak them in hot soapy water, and scrub the oven walls and floor with a heavy-duty degreaser. Baked-on grease is the single most common deduction I hear about.
  • Oven drawer: Pull it all the way out. Crumbs and grease collect under and behind it.
  • Refrigerator interior: Remove every shelf and drawer, wash them separately, and wipe down the interior walls, door seals, and the coil cover at the back bottom.
  • Refrigerator top: Most people never clean it. Landlords often check it specifically.
  • Microwave: Clean the interior ceiling, walls, floor, and the turntable plate underneath.
  • Dishwasher: Wipe the door seal, clean the filter at the bottom, and run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner tablet.
  • Cabinets and drawers: Empty, then wipe inside and out, including the top edges of upper cabinets.
  • Range hood and filter: Degrease the filter or replace it if it is past saving.
  • Sink and disposal: Scrub the basin, clean around the faucet base, and run ice cubes with salt through the disposal followed by citrus peels.

Bathrooms

Grout, caulk, and exhaust fans are where bathrooms fail inspections.

  • Toilet: Clean under the rim, around the base, and behind the tank.
  • Shower and tub: Scrub grout lines with a stiff brush. If caulk is pink or black with mold, note it in your move-out walk-through so you are not blamed for existing damage.
  • Exhaust fan: Remove the cover and vacuum out the dust. A clogged fan is a fire hazard and landlords in Worthington and Upper Arlington have flagged it repeatedly.
  • Mirror and fixtures: Remove water spots from mirrors and polish chrome faucets.
  • Cabinets and vanity: Wipe inside every drawer and cabinet, including the interior top edges.

Bedrooms and Living Areas

  • Closets: Vacuum the floor, wipe the shelf, and check for forgotten nails or hooks in the walls.
  • Walls: Wipe scuffs with a damp Magic Eraser. If you have crayon marks or deep stains, flag them now rather than hope they go unnoticed.
  • Baseboards: Dust and wipe every room. They accumulate a surprising amount of buildup.
  • Windows: Clean the interior glass, wipe the sills, and vacuum the tracks.
  • Ceiling fans and light fixtures: Dust the blades and wipe the fixture housing. Bugs trapped inside light covers are a common find.
  • Carpet: Vacuum thoroughly. If you have pets or visible stains, professional carpet cleaning is worth doing and keeping the receipt.

Laundry Area

  • Washer drum and seal: Wipe the rubber door seal on front-loaders. Mold collects in the folds.
  • Dryer interior and lint trap housing: Vacuum the lint trap slot with a narrow attachment.
  • Behind and under both units: Pull them out if possible. Dust and lint build up heavily back there.

Garage and Outdoor Areas

If your lease covers the garage, sweep it out, remove any oil stains from the floor with a degreaser, and wipe down any built-in shelving. For homes in Powell or Westerville with patios, sweep and hose them down if weather allows.

Final Walk-Through Tips

Go room by room with your original move-in inspection report. Photograph everything before you leave. Note any pre-existing damage in writing to the landlord the same day you hand over keys. Ohio law requires landlords to provide an itemized list of deductions, so documentation protects you if there is a dispute.
